Celebrating Inclusion, Achievement and Community at Parallel Windsor
For families of children and adults with additional needs, finding an event where everyone feels welcome can be difficult. That's what makes Parallel Windsor so special. Inclusion isn't an add-on – it's at the heart of everything.
This year's festival brought together thousands of people for a day of races, activities, entertainment and support services. A number of our Swings & Smiles families were there, taking part in challenge events, enjoying the festival atmosphere and visiting our sensory space.
Amanda, whose daughter Georgia attended, said:
"There aren't many events designed to support and celebrate children and adults with additional needs. Parallel provides fun, entertainment, physical challenges (if you want them), and the opportunity to discover organisations, products and services that can help. It's rare to find an event where inclusion isn't an afterthought – it's the whole point. Watching Georgia enjoy herself without limits, surrounded by so much encouragement, positivity and acceptance, made for a truly special family day."
For many families, the beauty of Parallel Windsor is that everyone can get involved. Suzi said:
"Parallel is a real highlight of our year. It's rare that we as a family are able to find a day out that just works so well for all six of us. There is so much for all of the family to do and we absolutely love the races as there is such a variety that everyone can get involved. We are already looking forward to next year!"
That feeling of belonging is something families don't always find elsewhere. Kerry, whose daughter Kiera took part, explained:
"We find it hard to go out with Kiera but Parallel is all about inclusion and there is no doubt we all feel included. It's so refreshing to be amongst people who know and understand and if Kiera is having a bad day and screaming do you know what, it's accepted and we are so thankful this event happens. Being keen runners it's so lovely that Kiera can be included and we can run with her."
As proud supporters of the event, Swings & Smiles once again hosted a sensory space, giving families a calm place to rest and recharge before returning to the festivities. Our team was also out in force cheering on children, young people and families taking part.
At Swings & Smiles, we're passionate about Parallel Windsor because it reflects everything we believe in – inclusion, community, accessibility and fun. It was a privilege to provide the sensory space once again and to support families as they took on their chosen challenges. Seeing children and young people celebrated for exactly who they are is incredibly special.
The stories shared by those attending this year say it all. Parallel Windsor is a place where barriers are removed, achievements are celebrated and everyone belongs. Judging by the smiles, medals and memories made this year, it's an event families can't wait to return to – and we hope you'll join us next time too.
